ICBC Does Not Automatically Cover Rentals

Standard ICBC Autoplan insurance does not automatically extend to rental vehicles unless you have the RoadStar or RoadStar Plus add-on on your policy.

Recommended: ICBC Rental Insurance ($10/day)

BC residents with a valid driver's licence can purchase rental vehicle insurance directly from ICBC for $10/day. We highly recommend this option as it provides comprehensive coverage at a very affordable rate.

Insurance FAQ

What happens if I damage the vehicle?

Report any damage immediately by calling us. Your applicable deductible will apply ($2,500 collision / $300 comprehensive standard, or $300 / $0 with Enhanced Insurance). We'll guide you through the claims process.

Is there a security deposit?

Yes, we place a security hold on your credit card at pickup. The standard hold is $500 (may vary by vehicle). This is released within 5-7 business days after the vehicle is returned undamaged.

Are there age restrictions?

Drivers must be at least 21 years old. Some vehicles may have higher age requirements. We do not charge young driver fees.

Can I add additional drivers?

Yes! One additional driver is included free. Additional drivers must meet the same license and age requirements and be present at pickup to sign the rental agreement.

Do I need insurance to rent?

Yes, you need valid insurance coverage for the rental period. BC residents can purchase ICBC rental insurance ($10/day), use our Enhanced Insurance ($15/day), or provide proof of existing coverage through RoadStar/RoadStar Plus, credit card insurance, or third-party travel insurance.

What if I already have coverage?

If you have RoadStar or RoadStar Plus on your ICBC policy, your coverage extends to rental vehicles. If you have credit card insurance or travel insurance that covers rental cars, bring proof of coverage. We still recommend considering Enhanced Insurance for reduced deductibles.

What is RoadStar?

RoadStar and RoadStar Plus are optional add-ons to your ICBC Autoplan policy that extend your coverage to rental vehicles. Without one of these add-ons, your standard ICBC Autoplan does not cover rental cars. Contact your ICBC broker to check if you have this coverage.

What's NOT covered by insurance?

Standard exclusions include: interior damage, lost keys, wrong fuel, driving under the influence, unauthorized drivers, and off-road use. See our Terms & Conditions for complete details.
